BIB grad joins Junior Team Canada on a trade mission to the Americas

Daniel Rodriguez graduated from university only a month ago. While many in his position are enjoying their last carefree summer before starting their careers, Daniel is preparing to depart on a trade mission to Panama and Ecuador with Junior Team Canada.

Daniel is one of 20 talented Youth Ambassadors selected from a pool of hundreds of applicants, who will embark on a mission to identify business opportunities and gather market intelligence in Panama, and Ecuador. The Youth Ambassadors will meet with industry, government, developmental, community and youth leaders to explore pertinent global issues and business opportunities in these markets.

“I’m thrilled to be a part of Junior Team Canada,” says Daniel. “I’m looking forward to seeing a new part of the world while sharpening the skills I’ve developed in international business through my studies and work experience.

In June, Daniel graduated from Carleton University’s Bachelor of International Business program at the Sprott School of Business where he concentrated in international marketing and trade, and minored in Spanish. He spent the third year of the program studying abroad in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

“The year I spent in Buenos Aires has been the most valuable experience in preparing me for this upcoming mission,” he comments. “I can’t think of another experience that could have given me so much in terms of cross-cultural competency, language skills and life experience.

“During my year abroad, I also worked as an intern at the Canadian Embassy in Argentina in the commercial section. By working with the Trade Commissioners at the Embassy, I earned great work experience in terms of promoting and facilitating Canadian trade and investment.”

Daniel and his fellow Youth Ambassadors depart for the Americas on August 13, 2009 and return on August 26.

Junior Team Canada is a program run by Global Vision, a national not-for-profit organization that is igniting young Canadians through education and hands-on experience to help create a brighter future for themselves, their communities, their country, and the global community.

Offered at Carleton University’s Sprott School of Business, the Bachelor of International Business is a four-year honours degree program that is focused on five key elements: business fundamentals; specialized courses in international business; intensive language training in one of French, German, Japanese, Mandarin (Chinese) and Spanish; and a mandatory year of study abroad in third year to increase cultural awareness and language fluency.
